Saint Aggie's '84

The history of a new musical as it comes to be…

1984.

I’ve been working the last few days on a song called, “1984”. It’s Fergie’s confessional/exploration of her fears of war and the future in general. I’ve eluded to Orwell quite a bit in the lyrics and I’m thinking that Fergie has just finished reading the novel and might even have it in her hands. The song starts out, right now, as a bit of a lament, but quickly becomes a pretty driving piece of music. My original idea was the song would be a ballad, but it’s just taken a life of it’s own. Probably a good thing. My idea is that later in the scene James will show up and sing another version of the song that is significantly more positive. (Maybe even using some of the same lyrics). We’ll see if that works. Anyway, here are a few of the first few lines…

FERGIE:
IT’S TWENTY DAYS TO 1984
IF EVER THAT WAS SILVER LINED
IT ISN’T ANYMORE
JUST TWENTY DAYS
GOD ORWELL HAD IT DOWN
CAUSE GOD I’M WISHING IGNORANCE
WOULD GIVE ME STRENGTH RIGHT NOW
