Saint Aggie's '84

The history of a new musical as it comes to be…

AC Flight 898

I love this iPhone App: Hipstamatic. It makes any photo you take look like you took it in 1965. You get to choose the lens and the film stock…and type of flash if you need one.

In any case, as you can probably guess, I am sitting in an airport waiting to board an airplane. A bit cliché perhaps, but what the hell, I’ve got a few minutes to type and a free wifi connection. Well, somewhat free…I did have to give up a whole lot of personal information, so I’ll probably have someone phoning and trying to sell me a Ginsu Knife at three o’clock in the morning for the next six months.

The plane in the picture, I’m assuming, is our plane (it’s sitting at the correct gate), Air Canada Flight 898 bound for London Heathrow. I’m traveling with my mother and I’m pretty sure this is the only time I’ve ever traveled with my mother alone. In the past we’ve always been part of a group of three or four. We have a few hours when we get to London before catching our connection to Edinburgh. On the flight I’m going to be diverting my attention from Saint Aggie’s for a few hours (probably more like eight) and writing out a piano/vocal score for a song or two from Red Lips, The Musical, which is a show I wrote in 2000/01 with Jeff Smook and the amazing Mr. Timothy F.Ryan. (Cast recording available from http://www.sixshooterrecords.com – or from myself if you run into me on the street in Edinburgh).

A Calgary based theatre company called Liquid Meld Theatre will be producing the show at the Vertigo space in Cow Town next June, and they need some pieces for potential cast members to sing during auditions in September. There was never a written score for Red Lips. How did we manage that? I love the show, though, and I’m so excited that someone is finally going to be resurrecting it. For the record, when it runs it will be exactly ten years since the first production.

Well, I know what I’ve got to do. Better start doing it. See you in the UK.
